5 - WHAT MOVIE PREFERENCES CROP UP WHEN ANALYZING PEER-TO-PEER USERS IN RUSSIA?

The share of peer-to-peer users in Russia that use file sharing networks to download movie titles matches the worldwide average of almost 50%. When it comes to the importance of movie titles among peer-to-peer users overall, Russia pinned down the third spot. Only India and Brazil, where movies were shared by 78% and 56% of peer-to-peer users respectively, could outmatch the film cravings of Russian file sharers.

Next to Hollywood movies, Russian movies enjoy a healthy dose of popularity among peer-to-peer users in Russia. The following top titles have something in common that further sharpens the profile of Russian entertainment preferences: They all fall under the action and drama genres.

The top 5 Russian movies released in 2017:

But we can’t forget that Hollywood movies are also influencing entertainment preferences in Russia. Although they do like to look across the pond for cinematic jewels, they seem to be a little bit behind the times on trending topics. Russian peer-to-peer users are evidently more inclined to reach for older movies, seeing as all top 5 movie titles were released in 2016. In contrast to the top Russian movies listed above, all of these top 5 Hollywood movies were either sci-fi or fantasy films. The fantasy movie “Assassin’s Creed”, for example, managed to attract more than 4.5 million file sharers in Russia and came in at No. 5 among the most popular Hollywood movies during the first half of 2017.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but movie piracy data can also be turned into an advantage for the entertainment industry.
