In our last article on the top worldwide file sharing countries in 2017, we saw how the daily average number of file sharers was distributed within each top file sharing country, as well as which torrent clients were most commonly in use. For this article, we’ve broken down the number of file sharers by content type – e.g. movies, TV series, music artists, games and e-books – in order to see which files are most popular within P2P networks on both the global and regional levels.
TV SERIES AND MOVIE FILES IN P2P NETWORKS: WHICH REGIONS CONSTITUTE THE HIGHEST SHARE OF FILE SHARERS?
According to our data, a daily average of nearly 14.1 million users shared movies through P2P networks from January to the end of May. Holding 49.5% of overall content distribution, movies made up the highest share of P2P users worldwide. That said, there are noticeable differences between regions. The highest share of regional file sharers for movie content (57.2%) was in Africa. This is in relation to overall file sharers in the region. In the other regions, such as Europe, Asia, the Americas and Australia, the share was 5 to10 percentage points lower than in Africa.
Our data also revealed some interesting figures for TV series. With a worldwide share of almost 27%, TV series came in second place among all content types, maintaining a daily average of 7.7 million P2P users across the globe. According to the data, the distribution of TV series content saw a large spike in one region: Australia. Nearly 51% of Australian P2P users shared at least one TV series file through P2P networks, while other regions showed an average share of 28.5% – nearly half the activity found in Australia. This indicates a huge demand Down Under for TV series!
GAME TITLES COME IN THIRD PLACE IN P2P NETWORKS
The third biggest slice of the worldwide file sharing pie is made up of video games. From January to the end of May, an average of nearly 5.5 million users a day shared different game titles with the help of P2P networks! But which region in particular had an above-average share of P2P users interested in video games? With a 42% share of P2P users, South America earned the top spot.

MUSIC ARTISTS AND EBOOK TITLES CONSTITUTE THE REAR OF ALL CONTENT TYPES SHARED IN P2P NETWORKS
In general, P2P networks seem to have been used the most by motion picture enthusiasts, whereas music artists and e-books made up a comparably low percentage. Nevertheless, 11.2% of global P2P users also shared music. Our data demonstrates a daily average of 3.2 million file sharers who shared at least one music file. Regionally, North America constituted the highest share of music lovers among P2P network users, with an above-average share of 17.7% – 6 percentage points above the global average.

Compared to all other content types, e-books made up a relatively low percentage, with only 3.61% of all shared content. The region with the largest share of e-bookworms crawling through P2P networks was in Europe, which amounted to 4.35%.
