The comedy movie “Bad Moms” tells the story of Amy (played by Mila Kunis), a 30-year-old mother of two who is overworked, exhausted and barely has time for herself. Amy finds sympathetic company in two other (bad) moms in similar situations, Carla and Kiki, and the jaded suburbanites decide to rebel against the typical day-to-day life of a mother. Raking in more than $180 million worldwide, “Bad Moms” grossed nine times its production budget of $20 million at the box office, a solid success.*
Now they’re back with a holiday twist: “A Bad Moms Christmas” was released on November 1, 2017, roughly one year after the original “Bad Moms” hit theaters. In the second installment, the three title characters have recruited some backup from another generation. With family visiting for Christmas holidays, the original comedy trio gains three new bad (grand)moms.
OVER 18 MILLION 'BAD MOMS' FILE SHARERS FORM VAST INTERNATIONAL FILM AUDIENCE
The first installment of “Bad Moms” hit U.S. theaters on July 28, 2016. Almost two weeks later, on August 9, movie piracy kicked off and more than 63,000 users downloaded and shared the comedy movie in P2P networks that same day. Once premium VOD versions of “Bad Moms” popped up on Amazon and iTunes, new high-quality torrent files made their way to the P2P networks, and file sharing activity found its second wind on October 18, 2016. By that point, more than 1.6 million file sharers had taken a chance on the movie since the first torrent files of “Bad Moms” became available in P2P networks. But when high-quality files hit the scene, file sharing activity exploded thirteen-fold to nearly 571,897 file sharers on October 20. In total, Bad Mom's film audience engaged in movie piracy grew to over 18,155,295 file sharers by November 6, 2017!
'BAD MOMS' FIND GOOD FILM AUDIENCE NUMBERS IN RUSSIAN CAPITAL'
Now that we know how often “Bad Moms” was downloaded and shared by audiences of the film in P2P networks overall, it’s time to take a closer look at the breakdown of countries harboring the biggest film audiences. These percentages were gleaned from between the first day of release and November 6, 2017. With a share of nearly 13% of total file sharers, Russia is home to the biggest share of film audiences for "Bad Moms". With 8% and 6%, the United States and India came second and third, followed by Brazil (4%) and Spain (3%).
Shrinking the geographic scope a bit more, the city ranking uncovers another interesting stash of information about “Bad Moms”. Since it dominated the country distribution, it’s no surprise that Russia landed on the top of the list again with its capital city of Moscow bringing in 200,000 fans. After that, the chart is less predictable. Following Moscow on spots two through five, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Casablanca (Morocco), Tel Aviv (Israel) and Athens (Greece) made it into the city ranking although their countries did not appear within the top 10 country statistics for “Bad Moms” at all!
WHAT ISPs DID ‘BAD MOMS’ SHARERS USE MOST?
With around 1 million P2P users, the most-used internet service provider to download and share the comedy flick “Bad Moms” was Rostelecom (Russia). With just over half of the number of Rostelecom users, Jio (India) and Vivo (Brazil) came second and third.
‘A BAD MOMS CHRISTMAS’: DOES THE FIRST-GENERATION HIT PREDICT COMPARABLE SEQUEL SUCCESS?
Admittedly, it’s hard to tell that Christmas is still almost two months away with holiday sweets on the shelves and “A Bad Moms Christmas” on the big screen as of November 1. But maybe the comedy franchise will be getting its gifts early this year if the new installment reaches the level of success of its predecessor. The first comedy flick amassed a vast film audience of over 18 million fans, a goal that is likely achievable for the second installment as well. But because the only torrent files available for the new “A Bad Moms Christmas” film as of November 6 were poor-quality ones, we haven’t yet been able to extract significant figures to confirm that achievement.
That being said, P2P activity for the first installment only really took off almost a full two weeks after the official release date in July 2016. We’re therefore in no hurry to make bold claims about the second flick’s success and will keep you updated as the figures roll in over the coming days and weeks!
