What’s new with the world’s most-trending artists this month? To find out, we’ve analyzed file sharing activity for the top 10 most-trending artists as well as some music further down the list. Summer nostalgia must have set in, since this month’s picks are singers of older evergreen tunes rather than highly anticipated new album releases. So, don’t expect to see any new faces on the top 10 list – the ranked artists have already had their time in the sun this year. Ed Sheeran, for example, who just scooped up 2017 Artist of the Year at MTV’s VMAs , has been hanging around the most-trending artist club since his album “Divide” dropped in March.
P2P USERS NAME LINKIN PARK AMONG MOST-TRENDING ARTISTS, WHILE JAY-Z DROPPED OUT OF THE TOP 10
Since the tragic news about Linkin Park’s singer Chester Bennington came to light on July 21, 2017, fans have shown an unrelenting demand for the rap-rock band’s music. In the weeks since, P2P networks have been crawling with Linkin Park songs, which in the end sent them to the top of the list and earned them a spot among August’s most-trending artists! The rest of July’s most-trending artists didn’t fare as well. P2P users seemed to lose their initial euphoria for two of July’s most-trending artists, sending hip-hop artist Jay-Z down to spot 11 and Imagine Dragons slithering down two spots to number 12. These descents freed up two empty seats for two familiar faces in the top 10: Armin van Buuren (spot 6) and Pink Floyd (spot 9). Other popular and most-trending music artists such as hip-hop superstars Drake and Kendrick Lamar, as well as Coldplay, Metallica and Major Lazer managed to remain in the top chart of August 2017.

WHO BROKE INTO THE TOP 50 MOST-TRENDING ARTISTS THIS AUGUST?
Although there weren’t any new albums soaking up file sharers’ attention, some music artists managed to climb up a few ranks all on their own and crept into the top 50 list of the most-trending artists in August.
Taylor Swift
Her new album “Reputation” won’t be out until November 10, but America’s country-sweetheart-turned-ruthless-popstar Taylor Swift dropped off another kind of gift to her fans this month. Following a few days of cryptic social media campaigning, the pop superstar released the new single “Look What You Made Me Do” on August 24, a day on which 23,400 file sharers downloaded and uploaded her music. Almost 70% of them passed around the new single in particular. This brought Taylor from an inconspicuous 88 in July to the edge of the big stage at No. 45 in August. These numbers are likely to keep getting smaller as the hit artist begins to release additional promotional singles leading up to the release of her new album: maybe even enough to shake off the lower ranks and enter the top 10 to regain her crown as one of the world’s most-trending artists? Korean R&B and soul singer IU has crooned her way into the elite club of the 50 most-trending artists. Although her last album came out back in April 2017, file sharers in the United States, South Korea and China in particular began downloading and sharing her music in earnest on August 5, which kicked P2P numbers to 22,100 on August 7. As a result, she jumped from spot 71 in July to 33 in August, with a solid fan base of 242,908 file sharers.
THREE CONSECUTIVE MONTHS IN THE TOP 10 MOST-TRENDING ARTISTS: LUIS FONSI!
Luis Fonsi’s song of the summer, “Despacito”, has been inescapable for the past few months, shared in droves by music-lovers all over the world. These figures have created a space for Fonsi at the table of the most-trending artists worldwide. Also, he lead the Billboard Hot 100 charts for 19 weeks! Anyone who has paid even the slightest attention to music activity this summer won’t be surprised to learn that “Despacito” even became the most-viewed music video on YouTube of all time, as Billboard reported on August 4, 2017. "After setting a record for most-viewed video in YouTube history on Friday (Aug. 3), Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" tackled yet another record that same day: becoming the first YouTube video to reach 3 billion views.", the Billboard magazine recapped the two records made by the Puerto Rican latin-pop singer.
One thing remains unchanged: Most people sharing files of Luis Fonsi’s songs come from Spanish-speaking countries such as Argentina or Spain. After a seven-month upward trend since January 2017, the popularity of “Despacito” seems to finally be declining with the temperatures. During his time on the rise, though, the Puerto Rican singer managed to amass a fan base of more than 2.2 million P2P users. Though still fairly new on the scene, Luis Fonsi has succeeded in keeping his fans excited about sharing his music.
Alas, what goes up must come down – even for the most-trending artists in our top 10 charts. Since mid-July 2017, the trend line for Luis Fonsi was hovering at a constant level, with a daily average of 33,500 P2P users sending files around P2P networks. As the northern hemisphere heads toward fall, fans might have had their fill of the summer hit and be ready to move on to sharing and downloading more autumnal music.
