Shah Rukh Khan's top Bollywood movie 'Raees' was 2017's most pirated Hindi film worldwide!
The new Bollywood blockbuster “Raees” hit Indian theaters on January 25, 2017. Right away, the action-drama flick charmed Hindi movie fans worldwide, commandeering the top spot on the top Hindi movie charts1 for 2017 so far. After its release, “Raees” was shared by 4,404,994 P2P users within a three-month period, propelled by a worldwide fan base of which more than half (57.5%) logged on from India.

TOP HINDI MOVIE 2016 VS. RAEES
Compared with 2016’s most-shared Hindi movie, “Airlift”, which was released on January 22 of that year, the success of “Raees” shines even brighter. Last year’s top movie started off with 4,288,893 file sharers in the first three months following its release – which is more than 110,000 less than what “Raees” brought in. If fans can maintain this enthusiasm, the new release has a great chance of conquering the Hindi movie charts throne in 2017.
HINDI CHART-TOPPERS DRAW IDENTICAL HOME-COUNTRY FAN BASE
Looking at the top 10 Hindi movies in 2017 so far, this genre seems to be – not surprisingly – most popular in India. An average of 60% of its fans are based there, followed by 19% in Pakistan and 3% in both Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. Taking it down to the city level: All of the top 10 cities with the highest number of Hindi movie fans can be found in either India or Pakistan.
These numbers show that the target group of Hindi movies like “Raees” and “Airlift” are limited to certain countries and file sharing activity takes place at a lower level compared with the films coming out of Hollywood that reach a more global target group. A release like “The Fate of the Furious”, for example, managed to attract 2,089,054 file sharers just within the first week!
