Fourfold increase after Ed Sheeran's album release
Even though a quite impressive 2,210,175 P2P users shared his files in 2016, the degree of file sharing activity declined continuously throughout the year: from a daily average of around 25,000 file sharers in January to 9,500 in December. That is, until he released some long-awaited new music on January 6, 2017. The newly released songs “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill” more than doubled the number of fans sharing his files within one day to 25,800, which is small change compared with the fourfold increase after his latest album release.
Ed Sheeran earned No. 1 spot worldwide
The huge success of his latest release has finally earned him the coveted No. 1 spot among music artists worldwide. He gradually moved from rank 15 in January to 8 in February and has now outpaced artists like Drake, Metallica, The Weeknd and even 2016’s long-term No. 1 Major Lazer.
Not surprisingly, the strongest increase was seen in Ed Sheeran’s home country of the UK, followed by the U.S., India, the Philippines and Brazil.
The rankings are based on the number of unique file sharers: How many peers shared at least one file of Ed Sheeran?
